Cyanocobalamin is a compound that is metabolized to a in the commonly known as vitamin B 12 or B12 for short. The name vitamin B 12 is used in two different ways.

In a broad sense it refers to a group of cobalt containing compounds known as cobalamins - cyanocobalamin (an artifact formed as a result of the use of Cyanide in the purification procedures), Hydroxocobalamin and the two coenzyme forms of B12 Methylcobalamin B12 and 5-deoxyadenosylcobalamin B12. In a more specific way, the term B12 is used to refer to only one of these forms, cyanocobalamin, which is the principal B12 form used for foods and in nutritional supplements.

In man, an exogenous source is required for nucleoprotein and myelin synthesis, cell production, normal growth, and for the maintenance of normal erythropoiesis.

Pseudo-B12 refers to B12 -like substances which are found in certain organisms; however, these substances do not have B12 biological activity for humans.

B Vitamins - MORE THAN ANEMIA PROTECTION

Vitamin B1 (thiamine) Treatment of thiamine deficiencies (beriberi). Prevention of Wernicke's encephalopathy. Dietary supplement in patients with GI disease, alcoholism, or cirrhosis. Required for carbohydrate metabolism.

Vitamin B2 (riboflavin), Vitamin B5 Treatment and prevention of riboflavin deficiency, which may be associated with poor nutritional status or chronic debilitating illnesses; isolated deficiency is rare. Active metabolites serve as coenzymes for metabolic reactions involving transfer of hydrogen ions, including tissue respiration. B5 - Acts as a precursor of coenzyme A, which is required for protein, lipid, and carbohydrate metabolism. Used in synthesis of porphyrins, steroids, acetylcholine, and other compounds.

Vitamin B3 (niacin, niacinamide) Treatment and prevention of niacin deficiency (pellagra). Adjunctive therapy in certain hyperlipidemias (niacin only). Required as coenzymes (for lipid metabolism, glycogenolysis, and tissue respiration). Large doses decrease lipoprotein and triglyceride synthesis by inhibiting the release of free fatty acids from adipose tissue and decreasing hepatic lipoprotein synthesis (niacin only). Causes peripheral vasodilation in large doses (niacin only).

Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) Treatment and prevention of pyridoxine deficiency (may be associated with poor nutritional status or chronic debilitating illnesses). Treatment and prevention of neuropathy, which may develop from isoniazid, penicillamine, or hydralazine therapy. Management of isoniazid overdose ›10 g. Required for amino acid, carbohydrate, and lipid metabolism. Used in the transport of amino acids, formation of neurotransmitters, and synthesis of heme.

Vitamin B9 (folic acid) Used in the treatment of megaloblastic and macrocytic anemias. Given during pregnancy to promote normal fetal development. Required for protein synthesis and red blood cell function. Stimulates the production of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Necessary for normal fetal development.

Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin, hydroxocobalamin) Treatment and prevention of vitamin B12 deficiency. Treatment of pernicious anemia. Used diagnostically as part of the Schilling test. A necessary coenzyme for many metabolic processes, including fat and carbohydrate metabolism and protein synthesis. Required for the formation of red blood cells.

LOOKING for an excuse?

"It's Monday!" Why you're pooped out before you pop out of bed. "Too many things on my mind" Why you forget half of them. "I don't know where he came from" Why you didn't look before crossing street and getting hit by a car. "Guess I'm just not trying hard enough" Why your life isn't going according to plan.

Instead of looking for an excuse you should try an extra boost of B-12. If you are deficient in B-12, here are some of the symptoms you will notice: dementia (sic, crazy), loss of mental energy, difficulty in concentrating, poor appetite, anemia (late symptom), chronic fatigue, sore mouth, stiffness or numbness, and skin disorders. B-12 an essential for health of nerve tissue and skin, aids in protein metabolism and enzymatic processes. B-12 has had dramatic effects in the treatment of various nerve-related disorders - even where conventional drugs and therapy has failed. Sadly though some members of the medical establishment shoot down the value of B-12 as a treatment for tiredness.

George Richards Minot, M.D. In 1934, George Richards Minot, M.D., and William Parry Murphy, M.D. won the Nobel prize for discovering the lifesaving properties of B-12. Actually it wasn't until years later that B-12 was isolated. But these men found that, by eating large amounts of liver - a food that contains 93.5micrograms B-12 per 3oz. - formerly hopeless patients with pernicious anemia could be saved. This founding saves 10,000 lives a year in the US alone.

B-12 deficiency B-12 deficiency can induce a thiamine (B-1) deficiency even when dietary thiamine levels are normal. This deficiency may not kill you but is enough to keep you in the dumps.

H.L. Newbold, M.D. In Orthomolecular Psychiatry H.L. Newbold, M.D., a New York psychiatrist had a 33 year old Ph.D. student as a patient. He dragged him self out of bed each day, felt lonely, insecure and isolated. Two years earlier, he had a nervous breakdown and lead to marriage problems. He subsisted on Thorazine, a drug used in treatment for psychiatric problems. After taking B-12 for two weeks, his memory was much better and he was learning well. In fact for the first time in two years he was again working on his Ph.D. thesis.

McGill University and Jewish General Hospital Two Canadian physicians associated with McGill University and Jewish General Hospital in Montreal treating a 35 year old psychotic patient hospitalized with severe depression, decreased sexual drive and slow reflexes. Had his symptoms progress to the point he couldn't sleep or remember recent events and manic-depressive behavior.

Thorazine, and electroconvulsive therapy Thorazine, and electroconvulsive therapy, did not produce results. Eight days of treatment with B-12 the patient was released from the hospital with complete remission of his symptoms.

Birth control drugs Birth control drugs can lower the concentration of B-12 in the blood.

Intestinal Surgery Interferes Physicians recognize that stomach or intestinal surgery interferes with the production of stomach juices. It is in these gastric juices that the intrinsic factor exists which combines with B-12 to aid absorption. Without IF, a B-12 deficiency can develop despite a meaty diet. Myron Winick, M.D., Columbia University, has warned as we get older we may face the same threat. Aging causes changes in the gastrointestinal track which includes a reduction in hydrochloric acid secretions. "Since hydrochloric acid in the stomach may not be secreted properly and the intrinsic factor may be low, the elderly may be more prone to anemia because of poor iron absorption and poor absorption of vitamin B-12."

Nerves and Blood B-12 works tirelessly keeping our nerves and blood in shape, maintaining healthy growth and even playing a role in the synthesis of DNA, the genetic blueprint you pass along to the next generation.

Protein Sheath Because of B-12's role in building the protein sheath that surrounds the nerve fibers and spinal cord, a B-12 deficiency can result in a slow deterioration of the nervous tissue. That begins to show up as numbness or prickly sensations in the extremities, burning feet, forgetfulness, depression and mental problems.

B-12 shortage A B-12 shortage in the production of red blood cells results in bloated, misshapen cells, unable to carry oxygen (their main job in life), so you wind up getting pale, tired and anemic.

Alan Gaby, M.D. Alan Gaby, M.D. uses B-12 to treat fatigue, pains that follow shingles, hepatitis, nerve damage associated with diabetes, bursitis of the shoulder and a host of psychiatric problems.

Michael F. Murphy, M.D. Michael F. Murphy, M.D. of St.. Bartholomew's Hospital in London, "As the public becomes more concerned with diet and the numbers of vegans and other vegetarians seem to be increasing, it is important that the risk of vitamin B-12 deficiency is recognized and complications of deficiency be prevented".

B-12 status If you rarely eat meat, don't like liver and eat a lot of noodles, rice, potatoes and vegetables, you should do something to protect your B-12 status.
